We stopped for a picnic lunch as we were driving to our summer cottage in B.C.’s northern interior. We got lost on some backroads and were compensated with a spectacular sight. A wildfire had devastated the landscape a year or two earlier and now the starkness of the blackened and burnt trees was softened and strangely beautiful against a backdrop of jewel-toned fireweed drifts stretching out before us in every direction. Somehow, it filled our hearts with hope.
